Menopausal and pre-menopausal women

In the years before menopause, the cycle changes in many women.  It often becomes shorter and usually irregular. The probability of becoming pregnant decreases, but is still a real risk.

Certain gynaecological complaints can increase: fibroids, benign thickening of the uterus, or endometriosis – a chronic and painful accumulation of tissue in the uterine lining. At the beginning of menopause, heavy or prolonged bleeding can become a problem for women, leading to iron deficiency and exhaustion.

In this phase of life, the hormonal IUS provides a solution to these symptoms:  An IUS can slow down the growth of fibroids, reduce heavy bleeding, and also provide safe contraceptive protection. It is generally recommended to use contraception until about the age of 51.

For women who use estrogens as part of hormone replacement therapy, the IUS is an ideal supplement. The corpus luteum hormone in the IUS prevents the build-up of the uterine lining. Thus, women no longer have monthly periods. (Women who use hormone replacement therapy without an IUS still have regular periods.)
